What is Optimism?

Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 optimistic rollup and one of the original L2 scaling solutions alongside Arbitrum. It pioneered the OP Stack, the open-source rollup framework now used by Base, World Chain, and many others (collectively called the Superchain). ETH is the gas token; OP is the governance token for the Optimism Collective, which distributes retroactive public goods funding to contributors to the ecosystem. The Optimism mainnet hosts a mature set of DeFi protocols including Velodrome, Synthetix (which originated here), Aave, and Uniswap. Gas fees are a small fraction of Ethereum mainnet.
